maintaining canal

The District maintains over 1,000 miles of canal banks to keep our flood control system working properly. Regular mowing ensures rights-of-way remain clear for emergency access and maintenance.

Mowing Schedule

  • Flat banks (tops): mowed every other month
  • Canal slopes: mowed twice a year
  • Restricted/smaller banks: mowed with special equipment or treated with herbicide at least twice a year

What to Expect

Our crews use large mowing equipment designed for canal banks. Tops and slopes may be cut at different times, so the two areas may not always appear uniform. LWDD does not maintain private items such as fence lines or permitted improvements such as culvert/bridge crossings or guardrails.

Purpose

Unlike a landscape service, our goal is safe access for flood control — not aesthetics. Some communities, with permission, may choose to perform additional maintenance at their own expense if they want a higher level of appearance.

Restricted Areas

Some canal banks are unsafe for mowing. In these locations, vegetation may be controlled with herbicides.
